Lib Dems, Greens and Labour in Harrogate District unite against prorogation of Parliament

August 29, 2019 7:36 PM

The Liberal Democrats, Green and Labour Parties in Harrogate District have issued a joint statement condemning Boris Johnson's prorogation of Parliament:

Big Ben

Judith Rogerson, Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Candidate for Harrogate and Knaresborough said,

"Brexit was sold as being all about Parliament taking back control. Silencing elected MPs to stifle debate and force through a no deal Brexit is a democratic outrage. It is the opposite of taking back control. A no deal Brexit will be a catastrophe for the country and will cause serious harm to residents in our local region.

Our current MP Andrew Jones must put the interests of his constituents first at this time of national crisis. I hope that he will act quickly to condemn this outrageous prorogation of Parliament and join with the cross party group of MPs who are working together to stop the Prime Minister crashing us out of the EU in October."

Margaret Smith said,

"As Chair of Harrogate and Knaresborough Constituency Labour Party I can confirm that we are appalled at the attempt by Mr Johnson to undermine our democratic Houses of Parliament in order to pursue a No Deal Brexit for which the country did not vote.

We support all attempts to try to reverse this action and would encourage people to contact their MPs and to sign the online petitions available. "

Bill Rigby, Chair of Harrogate and District Green Party said,

"We are outraged by this blatant contempt for and attack on our parliamentary democracy : the 'mother of parliaments'. It is irresponsible arrogance of the highest order and it must be stopped. A final say referendum is still the only democratic way out of a no-deal Brexit. Dragging the Queen into this to give spurious authenticity to Johnson's action by suggesting it is her decision, when it clearly isn't, is gross manipulation of the public."

Geoff Webber, Leader of NYCC Liberal Democrat Group said,

"This is a disgraceful attempt to subvert our democratic process and will undermine our accepted political conventions for years to come."

Jointly, we urge every citizen urgently to write to their MP to use their influence to stop the upstart Conservative Prime Minister Johnson in his bid to undermine our Parliament. If he is allowed to continue unchecked it will lead to the loss of our voice. This threatens our democracy and the stability of our country - and in fact the world. This is happening now; we need to act now. Never has the need been so strong to put aside party political differences and fight side by side for the common cause. We have power in our commitment and unity - let us use it.
