Demanding better for rail users

January 6, 2019 1:10 PM

Over the Christmas holidays Northern quietly announced that it is yet to start phasing out its creaking stock of Pacer trains. This is despite having previously said this would begin before the end of 2018. The delay won't come as a surprise to those who regularly rely on Northern and who are facing an increase in fares this January despite the continued terrible service.

Judith Rogerson, Lib Dem Parliamentary Candidate for Harrogate & Knaresborough said:

"Like so many other local rail users I am fed up of being crammed into carriages that are not fit for purpose. I have lost count of the number of times I was late for important work or personal commitments due to late running or cancelled trains during 2018.

Can we take any comfort from knowing that it is our MP for Harrogate & Knaresborough, Andrew Jones, who is now the Minister responsible for the state of our railways? I fear not. Promises were made about electrification in the past but this has still not happened. A slight tweak to the compensation scheme is not good enough.

All we ask for is a modern and reliable service. If Northern cannot provide this then the time has come to strip it of the franchise."
