Some of our Lib Dem Conference pledges...

September 30, 2018 10:09 AM

It was a successful weekend for our Harrogate & Knaresborough team at the recent Lib Dem Party Conference in Brighton where we received a 'Best By-Election' award following our victory in Knaresborough over the summer.

But as well as celebrating our successes, Party members got to debate and decide Lib Dem policy. Here are just 7 of those bold, progressive commitments that we made:

1) We will tackle wealth inequality

Lib Dems embrace the innovation and prosperity generated by the economy, but recognise that this can concentrate power and resources amongst a small number of people. We will demand a fairer tax system that promotes more equal distribution of wealth and investment in areas where it is needed most.

2) We will end mental health discrimination

Lib Dems are committed to ensuring that mental health services are fully funded so that people can be given care without unnecessarily having to be detained. We are calling on the Government to reform legislation so that there is no undue discrimination against those living with mental health conditions.

3) We will take in more refugees

Lib Dems would change key legislation to make it easier for those seeking sanctury in the UK to come and settle here, abolish the arbitrary net migration target and close 8 out of 10 detention centres to introduce a much needed, more compassionate approach to immigration.

4) We will confront the housing crisis

Everyone has a right to live in an affordable, secure home in a safe environment. The Lib Dems will fight for increased provision of social and affordable housing and stronger protections for those who rent their home.

5) We will seek to end plastic pollution

Lib Dems recognise the urgent need to deal with the major global problem of marine pollution. We will campaign to eliminate single use plastic. We will keep working hard with all levels of government to promote the importance of recycling and avoiding using plastic wherever possible.

6) We will fight for justice for the Windrush Generation

Lib Dems called for a public enquiry into the Government's hostile environment policy. We support the introduction of a compensation system and the full restoration of rights for those who have suffered injustices, as well as the return of those who have been wrongly deported or detained to their homes in the UK.

7) We will continue to demand a People's Vote to bring about an Exit from Brexit

Lib Dems are redoubling our efforts to stop Brexit by demanding a final say on any Brexit deal, with an option to remain a member of the EU on the ballot paper.
